The Expanded Function Dental Assistant performs a variety of patient care services in both a clinical setting and an operating room setting. Assists the dentist as needed for patient preparation, exams, and procedures, utilizing four handed dentistry, expanded functions, taking x-rays, maintaining clinical inventory supply, and providing customer service. This individual performs patient registration, scheduling appointments, chart maintenance, and patient correspondence. Maintains, organizes, stocks, and cleans dental equipment and unit(s). This role includes assuring smooth patient flow, providing patient education, explaining insurance coverage/co-pays, obtaining Medicaid Waivers (as needed), and providing clinical clerical support.

Qualifications for the Expanded Function Dental Assistant Role

  • Training as an expanded functions dental assistant with an accredited training program
  • Registered dental assistant license is preferred
  • Previous experience or formal training as a dental assistant is required
  • X-ray certification, CPR/BLS certification and dental radiographic certificate in the State of Indiana are required
  • Ability to operate electronic medical/dental record systems is required
  • Ability to perform expanded function dental assisting tasks
  • Excellent skills in handling apprehensive or difficult to manage children
  • Ability to work with medically, physically, and/or mentally compromised patients
  • Certification of training from an accredited Dental Assisting training program
  • Expanded Functions certification
  • Previous Pediatric Dentistry or Orthodontic experience preferred
  • Ability to work in an operating room setting and pass the credentialing process
  • Ability to assist in dental sedation cases
